Important advice from your President

Frist published in the  NAEA August 2008 Newsletter: Don’t fall apart! It may sound like a cry for help, but one of the leading key factors inthe disappearance of student chapters is the lack of enthusiasts within the chapter. This happens when members graduate and lose contact with their university. Each year, a new group of fresh beginning educators enter their university art education programs. If the knowledge and enthusiasm for the NAEA leaves the school, the new cohort may not know…

Spotlight - North Texas Student Chapter of The National Art Education Association

In April, in addition to mounting an exhibition of their own member’s art work,

the UNT NAEA Student Chapter also hosted a fundraising event at a major chain restaurant to help raise money for their student chapter.

To promote the event, UNT gave guests a 15% off coupon and told them to present it to their waiter. The cash incentive gave guests a break on their meals and gave UNT a cut of the cash. Talk about a positive feedback loop.

UNT also designed and is now selling their ÜBER-fly t-shirts for $10 a pop. Check out UNT’s website for more information on what UNT is doing to grow their student chapter: http://www.untnaea.com/

NAEA Student Chapter E-Bulletin - June 2008

June 2008, National Art Education Association Student Chapter E-Bulletin

Greetings from your New Student Chapter President-Elect!
A sunny and warm hello this June from your new Student Chapter President Elect, Kristen Grzemski! I am excited to bring some fresh new ideas to NAEA to enhance our pre-service art teacher professional development. Details are to come next month! In the meantime, please read this newsletter carefully, as there are several exciting announcements!

First, NAEA is excited to implement a new feature on the website. You can now have access to selected presentations from the National Conference, including slides and materials! Just go to NAEA’s main website (http://www.geocities.com/naea_students/), and click “Convention,” to find the presenters' link. It is really amazing!

While you are on the Convention page, notice that the call for 2009 Minneapolis Convention Presentations has been extended until July 15, 2008. If you are a graduating senior, please consider taking on the role of a presenter nest year!

Next, I would like to touch on the wonderful experience I had at the National Convention this past March in New Orleans. The Student Chapter Reception was a great time. Heidi O'Hanley, our Student Chapter President, raffled off so many amazing prizes from our art supply sponsors. We had a great attendance of different student chapter members and it was the perfect opportunity to socialize. Bart Francis, our Past-President, stepped down from his position to make room for Sarah Cress, while his sweet-as-pie daughter hammed it up with him on stage. I gave a brief speech as the new President-Elect. As for the rest of the conference, I happened to attend a couple of sessions concerning leadership, and one topic stood out in my mind. There is an urgency among us as art teachers to band together, more now than ever, to insist on art education playing a significant role in curriculum. I met a teacher from California, who won the state award for the Art Teacher of the Year. She was deeply concerned, because the other art teacher (her colleague) at her school had just been notified some unfortunate news. The school had made the decision to cut her position because of budget tightening.

I am not writing this in order to discourage you as future art educators; rather, to be aware that we are strongest when we take our cause on a united, national scale. If you have read our NAEA President Bonnie Rushlow’s April newsletter (it may be found on NAEA’s website), you are familiar with her notes on art educators as leaders. She reminds us that No Child Left Behind insists that the

visual arts are part of the core curriculum. My thoughts for all of us as pre-service teachers can be taken on into a political direction. I propose that we do small things within our reach to communicate our pride in our profession and in our students. One way to do this is to find out who your local and state representatives are. (You can integrate social studies learning and collaborate with other teachers to assign students to find out who those important people are and how best to reach them). Create a project with your students in which you can personally send them artwork. It could be cards created by elementary students or photograph prints made by high school students. Encourage the officials to decorate the office space with the artwork. The same may be said for other highly visible and connected figures in the town. Make personal relationships with those people and form allies in your community. Why use your own voice all the time when you can use a MEGAPHONE? I am optimistic that our field will take a new direction in the future where visual culture, design, and personal expression take prominence.

Now, back to summer, I wish all of you the best during this school year transition. Many of you are looking for your first job, as I am now. One of the most exciting things about this process is discovering the diversity of positions out there. It could range from teaching early elementary to high school, from teaching an urban school to a suburban or rural, a small school to a large, from a diverse art department to a single teacher. The possibilities seem endless! One thing remains the same in every situation: the students, most importantly, need a wonderful, caring, hard-working art teacher- they need us!

Sincerely,
Kristen Grzemski, President-Elect

1. Have an Idea for a Presentation?
Do you have a lesson you would like to share at the national level? Would you like to share your chapter's volunteer efforts? You might want to think about presenting at next year’s conference! The deadline for presentations has been extended to July 15. Visit The NAEA Convention Page for more details @
http://www.naea-reston.org/

If you do not want to present at a full presentation, you may want to consider a roundtable presentation at the Student Roundtables next April. You have plenty of time to work on the roundtables, but we will let you know when applications will be ready!

2. Applications Available for the Student Outreach Coordinator Positions!
In an effort to expand leadership opportunities for student members, the Presidential Team appoints two Student Outreach Coordinators each year to serve fellow students in the East and West. SOCs may encourage collaboration between chapters, and communicate between the Presidential team and student chapters within their territory. This responsibility allows students to build upon advocacy skills on a national level while gaining more leadership experience.

We are looking for student leaders willing to serve not only Student Chapters across the country but students who are not yet able to benefit from their own Student Chapter. The term is one year and no SOC may serve more than two terms. Please visit the NAEA Student Chapter website and click on “Downloads” for an application. The deadline for Student Outreach Coordinator applications has been extended, but hurry and apply now!

3. Online Student Chapter Venues Available for Your Convenience!
Do you prefer Facebook to Myspace? Maybe you like to visit other online venues? Check out our list of websites available for you to visit!

Do you have a Myspace.com profile? If you do, come visit the NAEA Student Chapter group! In the group, you can meet student chapter members from across the country, share lesson plans and experiences, and post bulletins of any up and coming events at your university!

We currently have quite a few members in the group, and we would love to hear from you! Come join the group! Visit the NAEA Student Chapter Group.

Also, if you are recently graduated in your art education program and wish to share your experiences as a first year teacher, another NAEA group has been designed for you! The NAEA Early Professionals group is available for new art educators to share experiences in early teaching and offer advice for those starting to enter the profession!

Aimee Allen, our Social Outreach Coordinator (SOC) West Representative, has done an outstanding job updating the Vision West website, a resource for NAEA Student Chapters. Do not hesitate to take a look! You can create a profile and add it to the other Student Chapter Members and easily get in touch. You can connect, brainstorm, and exchange, upload pictures and videos. While you are there, take a moment to view a personal message video from Aimee on the site. NAEA VISION WEST.

Lastly, the Facebook profile is up and running! Just enter in our email address naea_students@yahoo.com to add us to your list of friends! Bulletins are posted in the NAEA Student Chapter group on Facebook, so don't forget to check it out for current events!

4. What’s new in our Student Chapter Blog!
We have a new way to discuss Student Chapter events, lesson plans, fundraisers, and more! Visit our NAEA Student Chapter Blog!

In the Blog, you can communicate with your Student Outreach Coordinators, share past and present conference experiences, hear from past and present presidents of the Student Chapter, or even share experiences from your state conference! I would take advantage of the lesson plan ideas for all education levels! Post your own lesson too!

5. Student Chapter Spotlight
What is your student chapter up to these days?? We want to know! Send the Student Chapter Presidents a 200 to 300 word email detailing some of the fantatic activties that are going on.
Please send your chapter’s essay to naea_students@yahoo.com.

6. Student Chapter Nominations Now Open
Do you know someone in art education that could perform as a great leader for NAEA’s Board of Directors? It is a six-year commitment, and there are several different categories. More information can be found on the initial NAEA opening web page.

*Send us your chapter's web address!*
STUDENT CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT
Columbia College Chicago's Student Chapter is proud of the art show that is going on now inside of C-Spaces gallery on 33 E. Congress, downtown Chicago. The show is called stART Creativity and features student teachers' students artwork from this past spring session of student teaching. Student teachers were allowed to hang three pieces of student artwork along with one piece of their own artwork. This show has provided a new connection to the community, and pride in the students and the schools from which the artwork has been created.
